Gut Reaction

A new yogurt product promoting digestive health through probiotics is Yo-Plus from Yoplait. The company says it is, the newest way to help naturally regulate your digestive health. Yo-Plus provides yogurt lovers the benefits of probiotic cultures and fiber

Okay, so the health claims are promoting digestive health, and the yogurt is a good fiber source (one serving has 10 percent of the fiber Daily Value). But what do they mean by digestive health? Will it cure constipation? Make me never again have a tummy ache? Eliminate premenstrual bloating?

Nope.

After reading a thorough article on the subject of probiotics published by the Institute of Food Technologists, the digestive health benefits from consuming probiotics that are most substantiated in humans include easing discomfort from lactose intolerance and drying up diarrhea. There are other health claims for probiotics, but when youre talking guts these are the two problems that probiotics seem most likely to help. At least from a documented scientific study point of view.

The other important fact I got from the article is that even if a probiotic yogurt doesnt help you, it certainly wont hurt you.

A four-pack of Yo-Plus costs $2. Each 4-ounce (113g) serving of the cherry flavor has 110 calories, 1.5g fat (1 saturated), 10mg cholesterol, 70mg sodium, 21g carbohydrate (3 fiber, 16 sugars) and 4g protein. You also get 10 percent of the Daily Values of phosphorus and vitamins A and D, and 15 percent of the calcium DV.

Yo-Plus tastes delightful. Its creamy, almost custardy, and contains real cherry chunks.

For goodness sake: If you need a little gut regulation action, these are worth a shot. But you have to eat a serving every day for a couple-three weeks to notice any effects.
